Why iron only matters for planted tanks
Iron is one of the most important micronutrients for aquarium plants — it's needed for chlorophyll production and is especially critical for red plant species, whose signature color depends directly on iron availability. Iron plays almost no role for fish, which is why this reading only matters at all in planted tanks.
Worth knowing: the iron measured in the water is usually just the short-term leftover after your most recent fertilizing — plants take it up within hours to days. A test right after dosing will look very different from one right before.
Signs of iron deficiency
The classic clue is chlorosis: new leaves grow in noticeably pale or yellowish while older leaves stay normal green (since plants can't redistribute iron from old leaves to new ones). Red plant species also often lose color intensity and look washed out.
Why the reading fluctuates
Fertilizing schedule: Without regular iron dosing, the reading drops to near zero quickly since plants keep consuming it.
pH level: At higher pH, non-chelated iron becomes insoluble faster and less available to plants — chelated iron fertilizers have an advantage here.
Plant growth rate: Fast-growing or strongly red-colored plants consume noticeably more iron than slow-growing species.
What to do about deviations
For deficiency signs: fertilize regularly in small amounts ("little and often") instead of occasional large doses — this matches how plants actually take up nutrients and avoids swings. At higher pH, use chelated iron fertilizers (e.g. with EDTA, DTPA, or gluconate), since these stay plant-available longer even at elevated pH.
