Why phosphate is so often overlooked
Phosphate is one of the few nutrients that neither acutely endangers fish nor typically shows up in a standard beginner test kit — so it's often only tested once a stubborn algae problem already exists. Together with nitrate, phosphate is the most important nutrient driving algae growth, particularly brush algae and cyanobacteria (blue-green algae).
Unlike ammonia or nitrite, the target isn't always 0 ppm: in heavily planted tanks, phosphate acts as plant fertilizer and a moderate reading is actually desirable. In unplanted or lightly planted tanks, on the other hand, it should be kept as low as possible.

Why the reading rises
The most common sources:
Overfeeding: Fish food often contains a fair amount of phosphate — uneaten leftovers raise the reading directly.
Infrequent water changes: Without regular changes, phosphate accumulates continuously, just like nitrate.
Tap water as a source: Some water utilities use phosphate-based corrosion inhibitors — checking your local water quality report can clarify this.
Decaying organic matter: Detritus, dead plant matter, and leftover food in the substrate release additional phosphate as they break down.
What to do about elevated readings
Reduce feeding amounts: Only feed as much as gets eaten within a few minutes.
Regular water changes: The simplest way to keep phosphate permanently low, just like nitrate.
Phosphate-absorbing filter media: Special media (often iron-oxide based) bind phosphate directly and drop easily into your filter.
More live plants: Fast-growing plants take up phosphate as a nutrient and reduce algae risk.
