Water parameters in detail
Neon tetras need soft, slightly acidic water — incorrect water parameters make them noticeably more prone to disease. Warmer water (up to 79-81°F) is possible but raises metabolic activity and can shorten lifespan. More on the basics in our pH Level and GH articles.

- Other South American species with similar water needs
- Small corydoras, otocinclus
- Bristlenose pleco
Not suitable
- Angelfish (predation risk — neons fit their mouth)
- Larger predatory fish
Notable traits
Neon tetras are known for being prone to ich (white spot disease) when moved to a new tank — watch them closely, especially in the first few weeks.
Breeding in a normal community tank is practically impossible — it requires a separate breeding tank with very specific, soft and acidic water conditions.
Common mistakes
The most common beginner mistakes: too small a school (under 10 fish causes stress), water that's too hard, and housing them with angelfish, which may eventually view neons as prey.
