Water parameters in detail
Angelfish prefer soft, slightly acidic water but are considered adaptable enough for a normal community tank. More important than exact water parameters for this species is clean water with regular water changes.
Tank mates — proceed with caution
Important to know: Angelfish are cichlids and therefore predatory — anything that fits in their mouth is fair game. Small fish like neon tetras or guppies should not be kept with angelfish, even though this sometimes works for a while.
Good fit
- Corydoras, larger plecos
- Medium-sized tetras
- Dwarf cichlids
Not suitable
- Small fish under 1.2 in
- Fin nippers like tiger barbs
- Shrimp (they nip at fins)
Notable traits
Angelfish establish territories, especially pronounced during breeding. The more space available, the less aggressive they behave toward tankmates. With too little room, they become noticeably more territorial, since their territory then spans the entire tank.
Common mistakes
The most common beginner mistakes: too small or too shallow a tank, housing them with tankmates that are too small, and underestimating their predatory nature.
